Project Background
Preservation of a home’s intrinsic spirit is even more important when renovating a historical masterpiece previously owned by both the Thoreau and Alcott families.
And historic homes, or “aged” properties, provide both challenges and opportunities for exceptional outcomes. Floors settle. Walls are out of true and out of plum due to age. But there is something in a home’s spirit, in bones and patina, that is ruined by making everything look perfect and brand new. Instead, we honor and work with the authentic precedent of the home. We execute improvements that we feel will best serve its future, and seamlessly blend them with a home’s resplendent past.
This was a true opportunity to blend aura and craft; elevating the feel without changing the style. We felt a tremendous honor and privilege bringing this home into the next chapter of its life as an important piece of history for Concord, New England, and the nation.
