Constructing Careers: A Look Inside Our 2024 Summer Internship

As the summer comes to a close, we want to share the experiences and contributions of our 2024 summer intern, Owen.

Owen, a rising junior at Wentworth Institute of Technology, joined us with enthusiasm and a genuine eagerness to learn. Our internship program aims to provide students with a well-rounded, hands-on experience in large-scale residential construction.

Here’s a look at Owen's journey with us and the different ways he was able to engage with our team.

On-Site Experience: At A+B, I learned that the team believes that witnessing the construction process firsthand is crucial for understanding and managing construction projects in the future.

Invaluable Conversations: A significant aspect of my internship was the opportunity to engage with Construction Managers (CMs), Lead Carpenters (LCs), and crew members. Every person on site shared their knowledge generously, making each day a learning experience. The welcoming atmosphere at ABA facilitated open conversations, allowing me to ask questions and gain valuable insights.

Exposure to Diverse Projects: Throughout the internship, I visited multiple job sites, each at different stages of construction. This exposure allowed me to observe various challenges and solutions, broadening my understanding of the construction process from inception to completion.

I believe that this is the best way to start when first entering construction, as knowing what it actually takes to build something provides a better understanding and perspective to managing the construction.

“Every person on site is like having a new mentor for the day. The welcoming and receptive environment that ABA has is critical to and promotes conversations with anyone and everyone on site.”

Engaging in Varied Tasks: I took on various tasks, whether desk work or manual labor, and found each one rewarding. The approach at ABA ensures that interns have a dynamic and balanced workday, keeping the experience engaging and educational.

Shadowing Meetings: I had the chance to sit in on both internal and client meetings, providing a comprehensive view of the industry and how critical good communication is.

Positive Atmosphere: I noticed the positive energy and mutual respect on every site. This supportive environment made me feel welcome and motivated to contribute to our common goals.

Understanding Operations: I believe each building company has its own unique management style. At ABA I experienced their approach...particularly the role of CMs who focus on one project at a time. Getting acquainted with business  tools like Smartsheet and their project documentation style offered me a valuable perspective on operations.

Overall, it was a great first experience. After the second day, it had already felt like I had known everyone for a week. It never seemed like I was just another intern. I have nothing but good things to say about ABA and their team. Everyone was extremely respectful, great to work with, and open to questions.

Owen’s time at ABA has been enriching for both him and our team. We are grateful for his contributions and the fresh perspective he brought. As we continue to refine our program, we look forward to welcoming more dedicated interns like Owen in the future!
